Why Are Some Wrinkle Creams Better Than Others?

By: Geoff Hopkins

The customer today who notices a few crow's-feet appearing in the mirror has a very wide menu of options from which to choose. Many wrinkle creams are on the market, with a wide variety of ingredients. It seems like every day a new formula is discovered and hyped to the skies.

But do they work? Some do and some don't. How can you tell which product works best for your particular skin? The 'trial-and-error' approach is tried by many, with spotty results. An incautious consumer can be left with both an empty wallet and those same, unsmoothed, crow's-feet leering in the mirror.

The best product in the anti aging skincare aisle will be different for everyone. Consider the ingredients in each product carefully when making your selection, especially if you have delicate or sensitive skin. Examine the texture and consistency of each product. If it feels too thick or oily on your skin, you'll be less likely to continue using it long enough to get the results you want.

Some wrinkle cream companies are 'greener' than others. Does the product come in a reusable container? Is the container labelled as made from recycled material? Future generations will enjoy an unsullied environment if consumers make careful choices today.

Few customers need not read the price tag. Are you a bargain hunter? One helpful tip is to send for free samples. This way you can test many different skin creams without spending a lot of money. Once you discover the product that works for you, see if there is a store brand with the same ingredients. Store brands are generally cheaper. Another good idea is to clip coupons from magazines and the Sunday paper. Coupons are a good way to save on brand-name creams.

It can be difficult to evaluate results just by looking in your bathroom mirror. Gradual processes can be hard to verify. Your digital camera is the solution to this problem. A few 'before-and-after' photos will clear up any questions you may have as to the product's effectiveness. Once a week snap a self-portrait, using the same lighting so the results can be compared. You may be pleasantly surprised to see how much difference some of these products can make.

You can delve into this topic with as much diligence as your time permits, because there are scholarly journals in the field of dermatology which evaluate the effectiveness of various wrinkle preparations. Don't just read about the research on the back of the label, read the research. The Internet is a great way to find useful information. One caution: much dermatology research, both by the manufacturer and by academic researchers, employs animal test subjects. If you don't think that's fair to our furry friends, look for a skin care company that shares your concerns.

Your own dermatologist is an invaluable resource. He knows all there is to know in this field. What skin creams work best against wrinkles? Ask the man (or woman) who would know: your doctor.
