What Is The Atkins Diet?

The Atkins diet is a controversial diet method that Dr. Robert Atkins originally wrote about in 1972. It is a high protein, low carb diet that became incredibly popular in the 1990s and is still practiced today. Here are some guidelines that will help you learn the secret behind the Atkins Diet.

For starters the elimination or drastic reduction in the consumptions of carbohydrates is the cornerstone of this diet plan. The theory of Atkins is that since our bodies burn up the sugars that carbohydrates first for energy, our metabolism never gets around to burning fat away because the energy needs come from the carbs. Hence we don't lose weight with the carbs in our system.

One reason Atkins is popular is that it replaces carb consumption with high protein food groups so you are actually encouraged to eat a lot of meat, cheese, fish and eggs which other diets restrict heavily. And since the body burns off fats easily without carbohydrates in the system, Atkins allows you to enjoy some fats like butter and salad dressings that people hate to give up.

There is a transition the body goes through when we pull carbohydrates out of the diet called "ketosis" which means the body starts burning other things for energy, mostly fats. This is the heart of Atkins because as the body turns to fats to compensate for the lack of carbohydrates to burn, not only does weight loss occur but visible fat disappears.

But the heart of why Atkins works is also in the attitude we are taught because to stay on the diet, we have to do what most diets don't ask us to do which is demand our diet requirements even when eating out. An Atkins dieter is forceful in a restaurant to tell the waiter exactly what can and cannot be served with his or her meal. This means that even in a hamburger joint, you speak up to insist you get your hamburger without the bun but with extra lettuce, pickles and tomato. And your strict observance of the carb free lifestyle also means no french fries, onion rings, potatoes or anything else that will introduce sugar to your system.

This change of attitude may be the most important thing we need to know about Atkins because the diet calls for you to develop a new courage and pride because you demand that those who serve you food do so in keeping with the Atkins rules. But in this way Atkins fits with what we know about achieving a great win in life so if we want the weight loss we want, we have to be bold in making sure it happens in every circumstance of life as well.

A good Atkins book will show you some workable tips and insider tricks on how to be an Atkins success story and still enjoy the foods you love. And once you start networking with other Atkins disciplines, you will get lot of recipes from other dieters and from great web sites that spring up all the time with new ways to lose weight the low carb way.

Atkins has gone through some controversy but the fact is, it works and it works for all kinds of people and body types. You have to get past a short transition period when you first settle into the diet. But once you are in the swing of things and you see the weight melting off, you will be glad you stuck with it. Then when you hit your target weight, you can go on a maintenance diet that will keep you trim and looking good for the long term.
