Video Surveillance Systems: Do They Keep Your Home More Secure?

By: Thomas Moody

For an extra amount of protection, a home security camera system can be a great choice. Burglars do not want to be seen or heard while stealing from you. If they see that there is a chance they may be caught in the act or be recorded and tracked down later, they are more likely to move on and forget about robbing your house.

Most thieves are lazy and want to do their job in the easiest possible circumstances. When you have a video surveillance system in place, they may assume that you have taken the ncessary measures to protect your home. A theif may assume that you have more than just a video system as part of your home security plan.

A home security camera system will alert you to any suspicious activity including someone stalking your home. Security cameras have the ability to record both audio and video for further evidence. These can be used both inside and outside of your home.

There are two basic types of systems available. You can make them obvious or hidden. When you mount your cameras in obvious places, they help deter would be theives as described above. Hidden systems have two purposes. First of all is the ability to have a recording that you can playback. A hidden system also provides you with the opportunity to view suspicious activity in real time.

Sometimes a burglar may be someone you know like a babysitter, housekeeper, gardener or someone else who has access to your home. If your cameras are hidden and the would be burglar knows they exist, but does not know where they are located, this could be enough of a deterrent.

Prices, quality, ease of use, superiority and style of video surveillance vary. Some are like camcorders that you have probably used in the past to record your kids. However, in this case they are mounted inside or outside the home. A number of these cameras have a remote monitoring feature so that you can see what the camera sees from inside your home or even from your computer at work.

Now, with the newer systems, you can connect it directly to a computer where you get increased control and function. You can control movement of the camera with specialized software, the computer will allow for additional storage space and longer recording times and it can also be programmed to turn the cameras on and off.

If you have cameras in your home, you may not be too keen on recording yourself, as you lose your sense of privacy, so with a computerized system you can turn off the cameras when they aren't needed. With the added ability to program, you don't have to worry about remembering to turn them back on when you leave the house. There are even some systems that may have motion detectors that will start the recording process when a motion or sound is detected.

The advancement of technology helps you to keep your home safe better than ever before. You can purchase systems for a little as a few hundred dollars on up to a few thousand dollars. You must determine your level of vulnerability, the value of what you are protecting and your circumstances. Implementing a home security camera system will definitely enable you to rest easier.
