The Life In The UK Test – Your Way Into Britain

By: lee a smith

For those who want to become a British citizen or to settle permanently in UK, the primary step is to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen with the UK government. As per the new rule, applicants are required to pass a test, namely, Life in UK Test, in order to apply for the British citizenship (indefinite leave to remain).
The Life in the UK Test is also alternatively known by names including Life in the Britain Test and British Citizenship Test. For applicants residing in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, options are also available to take combined English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Further, in order to apply for naturalisation, the applicants’ level of the English language must be ESOL Entry 3 or above. In case, the applicants’ level of English is below ESOL Entry 3, it is important to attend combined English language (ESOL) as well as citizenship classes.
Life in the UK Test is conducted by Ufi Ltd – a non profit organization for administering online tests and assessment – on behalf of the Home Office. In order to appear for the test, it costs almost £34. The test usually lasts for 45 minutes, and consists of 24 multiple choice questions, of which at least 18 must be correct in order to pass the test. For applicants with any medical condition, more time is allowed. In the event, if candidate fails, he is required to take the test again. One of the greatest things regarding the test is that applicants can take test from any of the 90 test centres that are spread across the nation.
Above all, prior to appearing the test, the applicants are required to present certain important documents to submit it to the supervisor, such as passport; immigration status document with a UK Residence Permit; UK photocard driving license; any of these Home office documents: Certificate of Identity Document, Stateless Person Document, or Convention Travel Document; and a passport sized photo.
Further discussed in the article is info on how to prepare for the test. The test is usually on the basis of chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the second edition of the handbook published by the Home Office, namely, Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship, which in turn is available in the Stationery Office as well as almost all book shops. Mostly, the test covers almost all topics such as the UK culture, UK employment issues, history and heritage, law and politics, parliamentary democracy, and sometimes even science and technology.
On successful passing of the Life in the UK Test, a letter is issued to the candidate, known as pass notification letter, containing details such as date of the test, a unique ID number, and center location. Later, this letter, along with your applicant letter, has to be submitted at the Home Office. Application forms can be presented either through traditional means such as post or through the Nationality Checking Service (NCS).
