Throbbing Tinnitus - What Causes It?

When you can hear your pulse beating in your ears you have pulsatile tinnitus. There may be single or many rhythmic beats that can be experienced as a low pitched thumping or booming sound, or as a higher pitched clicking noise.

Pulsatile tinnitus occurs because of different underlying health conditions. More often than not, Pulsatile tinnitus can be relieved effectively.

Throbbing tinnitus can be the result of a change of blood flow in the large arteries and veins in the neck, the base of the skull, or the smaller blood vessels inside the ear.

Blood flow can be influenced by a variety of factors including:

Localized faster blood flow in the body which occurs during strenuous exercise or can also be caused by severe anemia.

Turbulent blood flow occurs when the inside of a blood vessel becomes constricted (hardening of the arteries) and the blood flow becomes erratic as opposed to smooth.

Potential Causes of Pulsatile Tinnituscan Include:

Abnormal groups of blood vessels and veins that occur within the cranial cavity near the auditory nerve.

An aberrant connection between a large artery and venous pool within the cranial cavity; usually the result of severe blow to the head.

Problems of the middle ear or infections. Chronic inflammation is almost always accompanied by a forced increase in the flow of blood to the inflamed tissue. Because this tissue is in the ear, some people are able to discern the increased blood flow.

Middle ear fluid. The middle ear is generally an air-filled space. If infection or inflammation occurs, or there is Eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid will accumulate behind the middle ear, resulting in Pulsatile tinnitus.

When one is experiencing high cholesterol levels and has a partial constriction of the veins as a result of the possible obstructed blood flow, Pulsatile tinnitus occurs.

Pulsatile tinnitis is treated by treating the root cause of the tinnitus. i.e. Pulsatile tinnitus that is a result of from high cholesterol levels can be relieved by controlling the diet thus minimizing the levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Treatment of pulsatile tinnitus generally involves a multi-disciplinary approach and includes a number of symptom controlling methods. The majority of patients with Pulsatile tinnitus are helped using standard methods of tinnitus treatments including drug therapy, and sound and/or relaxation therapy.
