Another messy maintenance task if you have a charcoal or wood grill is emptying the ashes left over from the grilling process. A good place to dump them is in your garden. The plants will lthank you. The gas fired outdoor barbeque is faster in coming up to cooking speed, has more maintenance costs, and is more expenseive than the charcoal grill. If your budget is really tight, consider a Japanese hibachi. Another factor to consider is that some people enjoy the flavors that a wood or charcoal fire gives the food. Other people enjoy the gas fire on their food. It all depends what your requirements are and how much you are willing to spend on outdoor barbeque cooking equipment.

Wood can be the cheapest as far as cost goes if you have a free supply. The problem with wood is that it takes much longer than charcoal or gas to get to the proper cooking temperature. Some prefer the taste that the wood imparts to the food that you may not get with a gas grill.
