Niche Marketing - The Easier Path To Online Success

By: Nick J Smith

The Internet has seen a dramatic expansion of use during the past decade. Today it isn't just a matter of trying to get as many visitors as possible to your web site. Effective marketing isn't about driving hoards of untargeted traffic to look at your webpages. If you want to be successful on the Internet, you need to choose a specific market and advertise only to those people who might be interested in what you are offering.

What is a niche, and how does the selection of subject influence your online success? A niche is an extremely focused topic of interest to people in that "community". It could be a crowd with a certain hobby, such as embroidery or Japanese flower arranging; a group of sports enthusiasts, like polo players or snowboarders; collectors of specific items such as classic cars, or people looking for information on a special subject. Whatever niche you choose, it should be one with a quite small, but lively community of followers.

Why is this method more useful than attempting to encourage a large group of people to purchase what you are offering? Quite simply, by choosing a smaller, more targeted market, you have an instant community of interested potential clients, waiting to see what you are offering. Come up with an irresistible, compelling offer and your visitors will clamor to purchase from you. You won't have to explain or persuade - just come up with an excellent product or service that your community wants and you will have all the customers you can handle.

So, what’s the best way of locating a niche? Think about topics that can be dissected into smaller specialties that would be desirable to enthusiasts who absolutely must have what you've got.. One niche businessperson was known for making hundreds of thousands of dollars offering badges for Lamborghini sports cars long before he owned one. Another made his riches offering fly fishing equipment online. Handmade art from Russia could be found on a niche web site. Are you getting the idea?

Locating a "hot" niche will take some doing. You want a market where there are enough people looking for what you’re offering and purchasing them that the opportunity for you to make sales is there. However, you don't want a niche so large that there is too much opposition. Fighting for customers is a waste of time if there is no way you will ever be able to dominate your chosen market. The end result of your hard work should be you coming top of your niche and generating hundreds of sales.

With a spot of studying, you can simply discover what people are interested in. Go to a nearby bookstore and peruse the magazine rack. Go online and scan for whatever is the current rage Look for new trends and popular topics. Figure out what people are buying, and how you can give it a twist and come up with an attractive subject potential customers would love to get hold of.

Your chosen niche should allow for the development of more than one product or service. Even if it is a variation of your 'core' topic, being able to present more than just one thing makes good business sense. After all, you want to be able to offer your customers the opportunity to purchase from you repeatedly over time.

Expand your opportunities by creating joint ventures.. Search for a market that is complimentary to yours - not a rival - and create a win/win situation by sharing lists and promotions. This can provide more opportunities to contact your customers and share information about something that may be interesting to them. Your particular topic may lend itself to being promoted by a few joint venture colleagues. If you can find a "guru" in your chosen field, so much the better.

There is likely more than one way to expand your niche market or supply products. Choosing the best medium for distribution goes hand in hand with your subject matter. Give value and good service, along with a unique approach to your niche so you stick out from the crowd, and you've given your customers a reason to return and purchase from you again and again.
