Natural Methods For Migraine Pain Relief

By: Michael Byrd

"Wow, my head feels like it's splitting." This is not just a fake way of shrugging off responsibility. More than 25 million American people are plagued with migraine pain. And it’s no laughing matter. But nature does provide us with natural solutions that can make a big

The pain and discomfort of migraines can last between 6 and forty eight hours. Pain is mostly pounding and is usually targeted on just one side of the person's head.

The cause of migraines is not known, but researchers believe they are negatively influence by inflammation. Medications, hormone changes, stress, alcohol, caffeine or even eating certain foods may be responsible for this inflammation.

There are two main classifications of migraines - common and classic. About eighty percent fall into the common migraine classification category without an aura. These migraines are generally much less painful than the classic classification with auras. What's an aura? The aura that comes before or comes with a migraine is usually bright flashing spots of light in your eyes or seeing spots or patterns of light moving around. Auras are sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

There is often confusion between ocular migraines and classic migraines. But, although the aura experience can be similar, it occurs in only 1 eye. If the sufferer goes on to get a headache, it's usually not as painful. The symptoms are only temporary and don't hurt the eye. Ocular migraines will definitely get in the way of reading or driving.

Once a migraine has started, a person may find temporary comfort by lying down in a cool, quiet, dark place or by applying an ice pack or cold compresses to the pulsing area. The migraine headache will usually go away after a nap or a full nights sleep.

After the headache has gone away, you should design a personal headache prevention program. You can make changes to your lifestyle that will greatly effect your migraine headaches. Get started by reducing stress. This may be difficult in the beginning, but it's definitely worth it.

What can you do right now? You can get started on a simple exercise program and start eating a healthier diet. You should avoid foods that have been known to trigger the onset of migraine headaches. These foods include caffeine, chocolate, sugar, soft drinks, alcohol, processed grains and any type of sweets. Since some of these foods are rather addictive, take yourself off them slowly to avoid any discomfort.

Now that your goal of being migraine free is in sight, you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of your new eating plan. Your diet should include fresh vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruit, lean proteins (chicken and fish) and pure water. And, to reduce the swelling and eliminate pain, add to your diet a high quality omega 3 fish oil supplement.

So go ahead and get started on these simple lifestyle changes. They'll help you make sure there are no migraine headaches in your future!
