Mountain Bike Tires - Everything you need to know

By: Alison Addy

Mountain bike tires are the most essential part of any mountain bike. They control how you ride and if they are not sturdy enough they could potentially cause an accident.

When you are on the lookout for a new mountain bike there are quite a few different things which you need to look at. The tires are one of them as they are by far one of the most important aspects of the bike. Most bikers tend to ride over rough terrain which can be fairly damaging to the tires if they are not strong enough the handle the stress. Then there are other riders who prefer to ride just on unpaved roads and trails. No matter which type of mountain biking you prefer to do, there will always be a tire to suit your needs.

Choosing the Perfect Tires

The main thing that you do have to look at before you choose the right tires for you is the terrain which you will be riding over. This is the sole thing that will determine which tires you should purchase. If you plan on riding over varied terrain then it might be a good idea to get a few different types of tires. Here are some tips on hutchinson bike tires and bike wheels, when looking into the right tires for you, you will need to remember that wider tires are better for rough terrain and they will also be slightly bulkier too.

If you were planning to ride mainly on the pavement then you should aim to look for a bike which has narrower tires. They also tend to be quite smooth as they do not have to worry about dealing with rough terrain. Usually narrower tires have less friction then wider tires. It is possible to use wider tires on pavements but the only problem with that is that it could slow you down quite a lot.

Once you know exactly which tires it is that you should be using, you should then look into the pressure of the tires. You need to set the pressure to suit your needs as when the tires are at the right pressure, they will make riding a lot smoother. If your tire pressure is too low then it could cause problems for you potentially as it could puncture the tires. On the other hand, if the pressure in your tires is too high, it can cause riding to be overly bumpy and you could easily lose control of the bike whilst you are out riding.

Another type of tire you can choose is a tubeless tire. These require a constant low tire pressure and they will reward you by lowering the chance of you having a flat tire. Overall there are a number of different mountain bike tires to choose from and it really does depend upon the terrain you expect to be riding over as to which ones you actually select.
