In the event your company is looking for a volunteer to be on the planning committee for the Christmas party or the summer picnic, be the first one to sign up. HR should be able to fill you in on what they offer in management training and/or coaching. This will teach you people management skills that will be invaluable during your career. Take on those volunteer jobs that will further your career and carry you quicker down the road to success.

Acquiring a management degree will put you in a good position to get that first management job and put what you have learned into practice. Another way to hone your management skills is to volunteer at one of your favorite charities. Aside from doing a good thing for a worthy cause, you may meet the right person who can help you land your first management job either through that organization or another company.

In the end, if you want to be in the running for a position in management, don’t be afraid to ask. If you wait for someone to offer it to you, you might wait forever. Remind them to keep your name on the list whenever they need someone to lead a committee, small team, or something else. By showing your interest, you will indicate that they should keep their eyes on you. When it becomes apparent you can manage small responsibilities, you will slowly earn more and more responsibility, eventually moving up to management.

Most HR departments in larger companies post a list of positions they have open on the company intranet. Other companies may just post it on the bulletin board but wherever it is noted, make it a practice to review the postings periodically. Apply for any entry level management positions that come up. Your boss will more than likely support your decision to apply for the position, especially if you have done a good job at your current job, developed your people skills, and received your management degree.
