How Do I Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Ontario Projects?

By: Rob Parker

Those with an interest both in learning or applying construction knowledge and improving the state of living of their fellow human beings might be interested in applying to work on a Habitat for Humanity project. Habitat for Humanity is a charitable organization that provides teams and materials to build houses for low-income people around the world. While the Habitat for Humanity mission is global in scope, the charity has a very visible presence in all regions of the world where housing may be unaffordable for certain part of the population.

One such localized area where Habitat for Humanity operates is in the province of Ontario. If you are an Ontario resident interested in working on a project that Habitat for Humanity has started, here is the basic information you need in order to volunteer for a project near you.

First of all, you have to locate the Habitat for Humanity affiliate office that is nearest to where you live. In Ontario, that means you have 35 different affiliates to choose from. Not all affiliates will have projects going all the time, or they might have enough volunteers for certain jobs. That’s okay; you can still get your name in for the next project, or maybe even apply at a different affiliate if you are able to travel.

Once you have contacted your local affiliate, you will be asked questions that pertain to your age, fitness abilities, and your construction experience. It is important to note that this charitable work is very labour intensive; you will need to be in reasonable shape if you are an unskilled worker, in order to work on the housing project.

The information you give to the office will be placed into their database. You may also receive an application form in the mail, which should be filled out and returned. Again, it will ask for information about your experience and so on, as well as dates you feel you would be able to work.

Once the information has been gathered, all you have to do is wait for the office to inform you of the next building project. One of the great things about Habitat for Humanity is that once you get involved with the charity, there is no limit to where you can go to help out other human beings. A local volunteer effort may turn into a lifetime of building vacations in some of the most interesting locations on Earth.
